The S&P 500 closed today (Tuesday October 8) at 1655.45.

The S&P 500 closed at 1658.78 on Wednesday May 15 (one day shy of 21 weeks ago), meaning the price return is slightly negative over that time period.

The S&P 500 closed at 1725.52 (an all-time high) on Wednesday September 18, meaning the price has declined slightly less than 4.1%.  (This is perhaps better said as “a mere” / “just” / “only” 4.1%.)

Since the close on Wednesday September 18, the S&P 500 has closed down on 11 of the 14 trading days and up on 3 of the 14 trading days.

Using Vanguard Index Funds VFINX and VBMFX as proxies for the S&P 500 and the Barclays Capital U.S. Aggregate Bond indices respectively, bonds have outperformed stocks since July 9 through the close of today.
